2012 Sustainability Symposium
|
|
|
|
Back for its seventh year, the Garden's Sustainability Symposium is focusing on
something we all require for a healthy life: healthy food. Each year, the goal of the
symposium is to focus on protecting resources related to people, the planet and
prosperity. By eating healthfully, we protect our most important resource – ourselves.
This symposium is taking a cue from the growing field of permaculture; the science
of designing productive landscapes that integrate plants, people, animals and land
resources into self-sustaining ecosystems that yield crops. Join us for a stimulating
winter morning full of ideas and useful information to get those
creative juices thawed and flowing!

The Dirt on Dirt
By tuning in to the importance of the soil food web and by strengthening it through innovative farming and gardening practices, people all over the world have dramatically regenerated degraded land while producing an abundance of healthy plants for human use. Join us as we explore this emerging field and learn how you can partner with the dirt under your feet to create healthy, productive and sustainable ecosystems in your
own backyard. Topics include: |
|
|
Sheet Mulching: Learn how to prepare new beds and boost fertility without tilling.
Composting and Vermicomposting: See a worm bin in action and learn countless ways to turn garbage into soil fertility.
Compost Tea: Compost tea is a supercharged plant nutrient and pro-biotic that can be sprayed throughout the garden. See a homemade brewer in action to learn more about this cutting edge technique. |
|
Soil Testing: Learn how to conduct your own soil test and what to do with the results.
Biochar: Find out how charcoal can dramatically improve soil fertility while sequestering carbon, and see how biochar is made.
