Internships

Horticulture Internship

Objective
To expose the intern to the many facets of a public horticultural institution, primarily in garden, grounds, and glasshouse management and maintenance.

Duties
Work under the direction of gardeners, grounds and glasshouse horticulturists, and the curator of collections to accomplish daily tasks as well as long-term projects.  Assist with the care of the gardens, grounds, and glasshouse, including duties such as watering, pruning, planting, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, mowing, and pest control.  Interns are also required to participate in a research project.

Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college (horticulture, botany or related field) or technical program is preferred 
- Strong interest in plants coupled with a desire to learn, experience in the horticulture field is desirable 
- Intern is responsible for obtaining housing and transportation. Assistance in locating housing is available if requested on application

Additional Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check 
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions

Wages:  $9.00/hour

Summer Education Intern

Position Title
- Education Summer Intern

Objective
- To assist Cleveland Botanical Garden staff in the management of plantings, structures, educational features and programming of Hershey Children's Garden (HCG) and Education Department programs, while enhancing individual horticultural and/or educational knowledge base.

Supervisor
- Hershey Children's Garden Manager

Work Location
- Cleveland Botanical Garden

Time Commitment
- April/May through August/September, 32 hours per week.

Responsibilities
-  Assist with the maintenance of Hershey Children's Garden, including all plantings, garden features, displays and other areas.  
- Support the management of Hershey Children's Garden's horticultural operations, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, mowing and other related tasks. 
- Assist in the development of informational hand-outs and signage for the Garden as well as stock and replenish related brochures, flyers, and program information materials.
- Create and implement weekday and week-end educational programs in the Garden for families, schools and other youth organizations.
- Assist with other tasks, programs, and events as necessary in the Department of Education. 
- Complete an independent project

Qualifications
- High school graduate with minimum 2 years in college or post-secondary program: prefer education, environmental/natural resources, horticulture/agriculture, museum exhibit/interpretation studies or related field.
- Experience in youth leadership or counselor roles. 
- Good communications skills.
- Availability to work week days and weekends. 

Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs. and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Wages:  $8.00/hour.

Green Corps Youth Crew Leader

Green Corps is a seasonal work-study program for high school students in Cleveland.  Students work as a team to maintain Learning Gardens, sell produce at markets, and make a salsa and a salad dressing to sell.  Throughout the season, students learn gardening, business skills, life skills, and environmental stewardship.   As part of this dynamic program, students work together to make their own lives and their own communities better.

Date of Position: mid-May through August, with somewhat flexible start and end; 40 hours per week

Primary Function:   This seasonal internship requires a high-energy individual who will be an integral member of the Green Corps team with responsibility for the daily programming and supervision of a Green Corps youth crew, their gardening instruction and youth development, providing leadership, student mentoring and supportive team building.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Assist with daily field operations, supervising student activities and leading the youth crew in the performance of general garden maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, planting; pruning; watering; weeding; mulching; fertilizing.

- In coordination with Green Corps Site Manager, monitor youth crew performance on tasks, recording daily attendance and conduct, assist with program instruction as needed, and supervise youth crew conduct on and offsite.

- Serve as an integral member of the growing, harvesting, marketing and production team for farmers’ markets, assorted vendor sales, as well as Ripe from Downtown products. 

- Conduct periodic student evaluation at direction of Green Corps Site Manager using specific measurement tools.

- Assist in maintenance of documentation & records on student profiles and achievement, garden produce and market activities.

- Provide support to Green Corps special events, community outreach, as well as grant reporting and record keeping.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:   Candidates must be at least 19 years old.  Associate or Bachelor degree in horticulture, education, child-youth development, agriculture or a related area is preferred and/or significant experience or background required.  Experience working with youth is highly desirable.  The ability to work in collaborative relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and excellent communications skills are essential.
