Earth Day, founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, was initiated as a grassroots demonstration to expresses concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air. The celebration lead to other conservation efforts including the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day went global and is celebrated each year on April 22.
Arbor Day is an observance that encourages tree planting and care. Nature and tree lover J. Sterling Morton advocated the need for trees as windbreaks, fuel, building materials, and shade from the hot western sun and established the very first Arbor Day celebration in Nebraska in 1872. Now most state observances of National Arbor Day are on the last Friday in April each year.
Celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day with nature crafts for children showcasing the importance of trees.
