Green Gardener & Public Horticulture Volunteer Certificate Program Fall 2010

Cleveland Botanical Garden and The Ohio State University present the Green Gardener and Public Horticulture Volunteer Certificate programs.

Unique to Ohio, these exciting programs offer both gardening and horticulture volunteer training - combining dynamic online teaching with bi-monthly, face-to-face onsite lab sessions taught by professionals from Cleveland Botanical Garden, The Ohio State University and The Ohio State University Extension.

OSU Hort

Join fellow gardening enthusiasts for this 10-week online course - based on existing horticulture curricula at The Ohio State University - to :

  • Explore the relationship between horticulture and gardening, and how to plan, organize and utilize plants in the landscape
  • Focus on a wide range of plants for indoor and outdoor gardening
  • Gain basic knowledge of plant terminology, and botanical terms and concepts
  • Learn factors influencing the normal and healthy development of plants and most common agents that adversely affect them
  • Get a behind-the-scenes view of horticultural operations at Cleveland Botanical Garden

Saturday, September 11, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Meet the online instructor, review the syllabus, ask questions, and receive hints for a successful online education experience.

Instruction -- online:

September 12 , 2010
The 10-week online course begins. Students read and complete the 5 online assignments within the 2 weeks prior to each on-site lab at the Garden.

Lab Sessions -- Cleveland Botanical Garden:

Designed to help participants understand the online portion, labs meet 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on these Saturdays:

  • September 18
  • October 2, 16, and 30
  • November 13   
  • Public Horticulture Volunteer one additional lab on November 20 

Basic computer skills and regular access to a computer and printer are necessary.
