Cleveland Botanical Garden is pleased to present a major retrospective of the stunning images of Haruzo Ohashi, one of the most admired Japanese garden photographers in the world. “The Japanese Garden: Photographs by Haruzo Ohashi” features 100 of this master photographer’s acclaimed works.
During Ohashi’s illustrious four-decade career of photographing Japanese gardens, he has photographed more gardens of historical significance in Japan than anyone else. In this exhibition, Ohashi has arranged the six fundamental styles of Japanese gardens to coincide with Japanese history and the social changes it necessitated. Those six styles are: the pleasure boat, the stroll, contemplation, many pleasures, the tea and courtyard styles.
His stunning images document how transformations such as the new fashion of tea drinking, the popularization of Zen Buddhism by the military and the emergence of an urban middle class influenced the Japanese garden.
Those with an eye for photography are sure to take note of the fact that Ohashi shoots with as small an aperture as possible to achieve the greatest depth of field for his garden photographs.
