What is Green Corps?
Green Corps is a seasonal employment program for high school students in Cleveland. Students work as a team to maintain Learning Gardens, sell produce at markets, and make a salsa and a salad dressing to sell.
Green Corps is also a work/study program. Throughout the season, students learn gardening, business skills, life skills, and environmental stewardship. Students work together to learn how to make their own lives and their own communities better.
If I got a job with Green Corps, What would I do?
Responsibilities include:
• Working in the garden—planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This work takes place in all weather conditions including heat and rain!
• Harvesting and packaging produce for sale at markets and restaurants.
• Assisting in planning, producing and selling of Ripe from Downtown salsa and vinaigrette.
• Actively participating in Cleveland Botanical Garden and Green Corps special events.
• Actively participating in workshops and field trips related to personal development, gardening and agriculture, higher • education, health education, marketing, culinary skills, and customer relations.
OK, I want to apply. Who gets hired?
Unfortunately, we cannot hire everyone who applies. We will interview and select students who:
• Demonstrate an ability to get along with others.
• Demonstrate a strong desire to learn and have an interest in gardening, business, and the environment.
• Will commit to 100% attendance for all program requirements.
If I were hired, when would I work?
• Students attend a mandatory parent-student meeting in May.
• Students attend a mandatory orientation in June (the Monday after school lets out).
• The summer program is 11 weeks from June to August. New students work 16 hours a week, Tuesday through Friday 8:30 to 12:30. Students returning from 2008 will work 16 – 20 hours a week, including some afternoons.
• Some additional hours for markets and events would be required. Some of these events are on Saturdays.
• There will be an opportunity for some students to continue working in the school year from August to October.
If I were hired, how much would I be paid?
Students are paid minimum wage for all hours worked.
