Children's Day Celebration

Celebrate Japanese cultures and traditions during Zensai: The Horticulture of Japan and participate in a variety of ongoing youth activities in the Hershey Children’s Garden including:

Registered Programs

• Taiko Youth Drumming Workshop
  presented by Icho Daiko and sponsored by the Japanese American Citizen's League (JACL)
  Saturday, May 3 • 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. 
  
• Folk Dance Workshop
  presented by Sho-Jo-Ji Japanese Dancers and sponsored by the Japanese American Citizen's League (JACL)
  Sunday, May 4 ­• Noon - 1:30 p.m.

Activities free with Garden Admission - no registration required:

• Enjoy special akido and sport sword demonstrations by students and instructors of Aikido of Cleveland Martial Arts & Wellness Center from 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  
• In celebration of Japanese kites, join the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites for a special kite making workshop from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  
• Visit with JANO (Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio) to see American names written in Katakana, a form of Japanese writing, on Tanzaku (small pieces of paper) at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  
• View different styles of kimonos including a special kimono for Japanese weddings, experience kimono dressing by members of JANO (Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio), and be introduced to plants, moths and silk during the demonstration, "It's a Wrap - Cocoons, Silk, and Japanese Fashion" at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. This program is also in conjunction with Fashion Week Cleveland.
  
• Try the Japanese art of Gyotaku - fish printing.
  
• Make a carp windsock.
  
• Create origami. 
  

All weekend activities will be held indoors in inclement weather.
