Welcome from the Executive Vice President
Thank you for taking the time to visit Cleveland Botanical Garden’s new website. I hope you have an opportunity to experience the Garden soon.
When people ask me where I work, I tell them I’m lucky to work in a paradise that’s right in the middle of a city. During your visit to the Garden, I’m confident you’ll find an experience of your own design – a place where you can lose yourself in lush gardens full of dazzling color, get up close to other-worldly plants in the Madagascar biome of the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, and enjoy a magical time in the Hershey Children’s Garden. With a few steps, garden lovers, fun-seekers and families all find their own garden paths.
When I was growing up, my parents and grandparents taught my sister and me to garden; and I fell in love with it. Today, to be working with a staff full of people who feel so passionately about plants, nature and gardening is a dream come true for me. It’s also gratifying that the Garden staff works so hard to reach out to the community to connect people with the important role plants play in their lives.
Especially dear to my heart is the Garden’s Green Corps program. It’s an urban-agriculture program that has been growing youth, growing food and growing Cleveland since its start in 1996. Each summer, teens plant, care for and harvest fruits, vegetables and flowers on vibrant plots that have been transformed from vacant lots. Their bounty then is shared with the community through local farmers markets and weekly stands at each of the Green Corps learning farms. The teens learn so much about life, agriculture, horticulture and business through their Green Corps experiences; and their enthusiasm is unforgettable.
There’s so much more to the Garden – educational programs for everyone from preschoolers to lifelong garden enthusiasts, , seasonal celebrations throughout the year and plants of nearly every color, shape, size and scent you can imagine. Please visit us soon to experience it all for yourself. You never know where your day in the Garden may take you!
