Green Corps offers lots of opportunities for youth to learn, adults to teach
There are many aspects of Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Green Corps program that you may find intriguing, and you can get involved with all of them.
These opportunities include everything from applying to be a Green Corps student employee, Green Corps seasonal staff member or Green Corps volunteer. You’re even invited to visit the learning farms if you are simply interested in learning more or seeing Green Corps first hand.
Regardless of what level of interest you have in Green Corps, we welcome any and all to contact us for more information or to receive applications for youth participation or staff employment.
There are no required criteria for youth wanting to apply to Green Corps, thus providing an equal opportunity for any individual youth to work for the program. Youth ages 14 to 18 are hired based on the desire and willingness to conduct physical labor, as well as demonstrate an interest in learning about gardening, sustainable agriculture and the environment. Student employees work to maintain one of our neighborhood learning farms, harvest and sell produce at on-site farm stands and area farmers markets and help produce Ripe from Downtown Salsa.
Each year, the recruitment for new Green Corps youth participants begins in February; and the deadline to submit applications occurs in March. Interviews are typically conducted the week of spring break in April. All youth must submit applications completed in their entirety. You can access a Green Corps application here, and the deadline for submission is March 28, 2014. If you need assistance with the application process, please call 216.707.2821.
In order to ensure our Green Corps Learning Farms are properly maintained and our teen participants are well-trained and coached, the Garden hires seasonal staff each year from spring through fall and maintains a core full-time staff throughout the year. Green Corps job opportunities are posted on the Garden’s Employment page as they become available.
Volunteer with Green Corps
If you’d like to get down and dirty for a good cause, you might consider donating your time and talents to Green Corps. We rely on volunteers to help build our new farm sites and help to maintain our existing farms. Each spring and fall, we welcome hundreds of Cleveland-area volunteers for a fun morning, afternoon or full day of hard work, team building and community service at one of the Green Corps Learning Farms. Contact us to bring your church group, office or corporate team, college club or school class for a day of urban farming. Please contact the Garden’s Volunteer Coordinator Jeanette Savage for more details at 216.707.2822 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Donate to Green Corps
If you or your company would like to help Green Corps and the young lives it affects, please consider making a donation. Gifts of any size are helpful in allowing Green Corps to continue its tradition of growing youth, growing food and growing Cleveland.
