Ripe from Downtown
You can dip your chips in spicy salsa made by Cleveland teens with locally grown ingredients
Teenagers involved with Cleveland Botanical Garden's Green Corps have been producing “Ripe from Downtown” Medium Salsa every year since 1998. The youth use fresh ingredients they grow and pick on urban farms in Cleveland and sell their salsa and other creations at their weekly farm stands, the Garden Store, local farmers markets and Heinen's grocery stores.
The development of the salsa allows Green Corps teens to learn the process of product development from start to finish and provides a window into business and entrepreneurship. Recently, Green Corps has added new Ripe from Downtown products, including Fire-Roasted Salsa, Ratatouille, Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce and Bruschetta with recipes developed by Tony Smoody, chef for the Garden’s catering partner, Bon Appétit.
Green Corps partners with Rainbow Farms in Madison, Ohio, to ensure enought produce is available to produce large quantities of "Ripe from Downtown" salsa. Proceeds from the sale of “Ripe from Downtown” products support Green Corps.
