THE GO-TO RESOURCE FOR BOTANICAL INFORMATION

Collections

The Eleanor Square Library has nearly 17,000 volumes and is one of the largest circulating gardening libraries in the country. Its resources encompass all aspects of gardening, horticulture, and botany. Although the scope is broad and international, our focus as reflected in our mission statement is on general gardening, local resources, sustainability, and core plant subjects.

The library has special book collections of children’s, teacher resources, new books, prominent gardeners and horticulturists, reference, and Madagascar – Costa Rica as well as videos, periodicals, and slides. The library also maintains the Cleveland Botanical Garden Archives and rare book collection.

The Archives collects and saves all records and artifacts pertaining to the Garden having permanent organizational, historical, or scientific value. The Archives also is a repository for local horticultural organizations and specific individuals whose work or purpose reflect the Garden’s overall mission. Information is organized and indexed into a word searchable database. Although not open to the public, any item can be made available by appointment.

There are approximately 1,800 volumes in our rare book collection dating from 1491 to the 1970s. The collection is comprehensive and includes botanical art prints, herbariums, and an extremely rare 1817 edition of the three volume Les Roses by Pierre Joseph Redouté. The rare books are available by appointment for review and can be accessed online.

Call Gary Esmonde, Librarian, at 216.707.2812 to schedule an appointment. Books will be removed from the rare book room and used within the library. Only one book at a time up to one hour may be used.
